This week is going to be short and sweet, as I am, like most teachers, hanging on by the skin of my teeth, trying to make it to summer!
Reading
I’m finishing up The Rachel Incident, and thank you to everyone who recommended it. I love the humor, the characters, the depth of the friendships, and the heartbreak. It’s fantastic. I highly recommend it.
Writing
I’ve been dithering about whether or not to share this, but I am currently querying my memoir, and honestly, the waiting process is really challenging and I feel absolutely bonkers. I appreciate any good vibes, well-wishes, and positive energy, but this process is LONG and stressful. Most agents say it takes between 2-10 weeks to hear back if they’re interested; most don’t reply at all if they’re not, so you’re sort of lost in a purgatory of waiting. I am not great at being patient, so if I am crabby, emotional, or refreshing my email in your presence, please know that’s why.
If you’re an agent looking for a heartfelt but darkly funny memoir-in-essays who has somehow made your way here, I’d love to share my proposal with you.
Ranting
Today, the wind gusts reached 47 MPH here in Sacramento. I don’t know if there’s anything I hate more than WIND. WIND makes middle schoolers crazy in a way that no other weather phenomenon does. Sacramento is the City Of Trees, which is great until there is WIND. Everyone I saw today had something in their eyes or was sneezing or miserable all thanks to WIND. Truly the worst (non-serious, obviously, I’m not saying it’s worse than a hurricane or a tornado, relax) weather phenomenon.
Recommending
I bought this necklace from Anthropologie awhile ago, and I thought I’d wear in occasionally, but as it turns out, I wear it at least once a week. It’s well made, goes with everything, can be dressed up or down. It’s $50, which I know isn’t exactly cheap, but it has proven to be well worth it so far. It comes in many colors, and I have to admit that I am tempted to get the Moss or the Denim Dark.
If you’re looking for other great reads this week, I highly recommend my friend (well, she’s my friend Jenn’s friend who I follow online and consider my friend, HI ALINA!) Alina’s 8 Things Substack and Olivia’s beautiful essay about digging deep for joy.
Definitely listen to Sentimental Garbage if you’re loving The Rachel Incident’s humor! It’s the author’s podcast and it is spectacular!
Sending good vibes your way regarding the memoir. I’d love to read it. Also, commiserating with you regarding the wind. I’m about 70 miles south of you. It’s not fun.
